The Alder Shirt Dress is a loosely fitted sleeveless style with two options. View A falls into an A-Line at the waist and features a curved hem, bust darts, and two breast pockets. View B features the same bodice as View A but with a gathered skirt at the sides and back of the garment resulting in an incredibly flattering and fun silhouette. This dress is a perfect breezy option to keep cool while looking great all spring and summer long or throw on a cardigan or blazer and you're all set for fall and winter! You'll learn how to alter a pattern to fit your body, how to sew bust darts, bias facing armholes, add a shirt collar, and sew on buttons and buttonholes by machine.

BEFORE YOUR FIRST CLASS: Please come to your first class with your pattern pieces traced. If you need help figuring out what size or sizes to trace, or how to grade between sizes, email jeanine.gaitan@gmail.com about connecting prior to class to get your questions answered. We will check your measurements in class and adjust your traced pieces if needed. Please bring your original pattern and tracing paper to the first session in case we need to make adjustments to your traced pieces. Do not cut your fabric prior to class. Once we have looked over your traced pieces we will cut fabric together during class.

All supplies are available for purchase at Modern Domestic.

Make sure to pre-wash your fabric in advance of class. This prevents possible fabric shrinkage that could otherwise make your finished garment too small.

Please purchase supplies in advance of your class. If you plan to shop for supplies the day of your class we recommend arriving at least 45 minutes early.

What is an “Advanced Beginner” class at Modern Domestic?
You have a good handle on the basics and are ready to dip your toe into more challenging waters. You’re still fairly new to sewing from patterns and could use help with how to manipulate the pattern to get a better fit. You want to add some new skills to your repertoire (invisible zippers, setting-in sleeves, sewing with a serger, etc.). Classes generally require homework.

All supplies are available for purchase at Modern Domestic.
