Mississippi Avenue Dress, Thursdays, July 27, August 3 and 10, 6-8:30 pm
Level: Advanced Beginner, ages 18 and up.
The Mississippi Avenue Dress has a feminine style that is also comfortable and flattering. It features a v-neckline, spaghetti shoulder ties, an elastic, almost-empire waist (slightly higher than the natural waistline) and has a front panel that creates a slimming and interesting design feature. In this class you will learn how to alter patterns to fit your body, finish neck and arm openings with bias binding, create an elastic casing, and how to finish edges using a serger.
• Pattern: Sew House Seven Mississippi Avenue Dress
• Fabric required for size and length desired, pre-washed. We recommend lighter-weight fabrics with some drape, such as rayon, linen blends, chambray, gabardine.
• 1 yard of 1/2" elastic
• Swedish Tracing paper
• All purpose thread to match
All supplies are available for purchase at Modern Domestic.
Please purchase supplies in advance of your class. If you plan to shop for supplies the day of your class we recommend arriving at least 30 minutes early.
What is an “Advanced Beginner” class at Modern Domestic?
You have a good handle on the basics and are ready to dip your toe into more challenging waters. You’re still fairly new to sewing from patterns and could use help with how to manipulate the pattern to get a better fit. You want to add some new skills to your repertoire (invisible zippers, setting-in sleeves, sewing with a serger, etc.). Classes generally require homework.
