Learn how to draft a split-leg apron perfect for ceramics, woodworking, gardening, and any other activity where you need leg coverage and mobility. Customize your apron to fit your body measurements, height, and activity needs. This class is an excellent introduction to beginner garment sewing with a low-stakes project to build confidence.
During this class, you will learn how to draft a pattern based on your body measurements and cut out fabric. We will also discuss customization options and any additional supplies needed for the second class. You will learn how to finish edges with double-fold hems and bias tape, attach pockets and straps, and get lots of practice edge stitching, topstitching, pressing, and managing bulky seams.
Be prepared - purchase your supplies online or in person before class begins! Class supplies are available for purchase at Modern Domestic. To purchase supplies online and pick up the day of your class, just select NE Alberta Store for pick-up. To purchase supplies in store, we recommend allowing at least 45 minutes to shop. Please note that our store hours are Monday-Saturday, 10am-5pm.
Supply List:
- 2 yd of medium to heavy-weight woven fabrics such as canvas, denim, cotton twill, and linen.
- Swedish Tracing Paper OR Grid / Dot Tracing Paper. Swedish tracing paper is recommended but please bring any tracing paper that is financially accessible to you.
- 1 spool of Mettler Metrosene All-Purpose Polyester Thread (coordinating or color matching with main fabric is recommended)
- Optional: Contrasting fabric for the straps (1/2 yd) and/or pockets (FQ or 1/4 yd). If using a heavier fabric like canvas or denim for your main fabric, try a lighter contrasting fabric (such as Essex) for easier sewing.
- Optional: 4–5 yd of 1” to 1 1/4” wide webbing instead of fabric straps (4 yd for a halter neck or 5 yd for cross-back straps)
*Make sure to pre-wash your fabric in advance of class. This prevents possible fabric shrinkage that could otherwise make your finished garment too small. Please also bring a notebook / pen or pencil to take notes. You are welcome to bring in an apron you already own if you’d like to replicate the bib size and shape.
*Skill Level: Beginner - You’ve taken a class or two and are starting to get comfortable with the basics. You know what a seam allowance is, you’ve sewn a little on your own, but you still need a little help with remembering how to thread the machine and wind a bobbin. These classes usually have little if any homework to complete outside of class time. The prerequisite for any Beginner class is a Sew Basics class, Learn to Sew class, or equivalent. This skill level is not for people who have never used a sewing machine before.
