Advanced Beginner: Goldie Quilt, Saturdays & Sunday, January 25th, 26th, February 1st, 8th & 15th, 5pm-8pm

Class Length: 5 Sessions, 3 hours each session

This class is perfect for the quilter who has done a few beginner level quilts on their own, and is ready to take it to the next level. It’s also ideal for those who have been sewing for a while and just want to come to a class and connect with other wonderful quilters, and leave with something new that’s beautifully made. This pattern is a little more complicated than standard square piecing, but also provides a handful of techniques which are used in many quilting patterns.

Cutting and organizing are important and will help to ensure efficiency when piecing. In this class, we’ll talk about efficient methods for cutting, piecing (chain piecing), and finding consistency in more difficult quilting stars and blocks. We’ll learn techniques for HSTs, checker blocks, and sashing.

If you are unable to complete homework outside of class, between weeks, you’ll still be able to complete 1-2 blocks in the given class time structure. If you are able to complete homework between classes, you will likely be able to complete the entire quilt top.

- fabric selection: FQs vs whole cloth, and pattern vs. solid fabric to create desired style

Class 2: Sunday Jan 26th

Class 3: Saturday Feb 1st
- piecing, checker blocks

Class 4: Saturday Feb 8th
- HSTs, trimming
- getting consistent blocks
- color arrangement

Class 5: Saturday Feb 15th
- combining blocks and rows
- pressing for quilt sandwich

Be prepared - purchase your supplies online or in person before class begins! Class supplies are available for purchase at Modern Domestic. To purchase supplies online and pick up the day of your class, just select NE Alberta Store for pick-up. To purchase supplies in store, we recommend allowing at least 45 minutes to shop. Please note that our store hours are Monday-Saturday, 10am-5pm.

- Fabric is suggested on the pattern and based on quilt top sizing you choose. 

Baby: 8FQs, 2F8s for corner stones, ½ yard for background
Throw: 18FQs, 2F8s for corner stones, 1¼  yard for background
Bed: 33FQs, 2FQs for corner stones, 1¾ yard for background

- 1 spool of Mettler Metrosene All-Purpose Polyester Thread, white, off white or color matching is recommended

*Skill Level:  Advanced Beginner - You have a good handle on the basics and are ready to dip your toe into more challenging waters. You’re still fairly new to sewing from patterns and could use help with how to manipulate the pattern to get a better fit. You want to add some new skills to your repertoire (invisible zippers, setting-in sleeves, sewing with a serger, etc.). Classes generally require homework.
