Learn to make a timeless wardrobe essential, the bias skirt! Bias cut skirts are loved for their flattering drape and comfortable fit. The diagonal cut of the fabric allows it to skim the body and accentuate curves without feeling restrictive, offering a luxurious and flowing silhouette.
It is the perfect class for sewists who are new to or feel intimidated to sew bias cut garments! You will learn all the tips and tricks to cutting, sewing, and hemming a bias cut garment.
This class is designed for all levels, beginner and up. Let your sewing level guide your fabric choice. Cotton lawn is the perfect fabric for a beginner sewist, whereas a more advanced sewist may want to sew with a drapey linen, viscose, or rayon.
Be prepared - purchase your supplies online or in person before class begins! Class supplies are available for purchase at Modern Domestic. Please note that our store hours are Monday-Saturday, 10am-5pm. Class supplies cannot be purchased when our shop is closed.
To purchase supplies in store, we recommend allowing at least 45 minutes to shop. Our store hours are Monday-Saturday, 10am-5pm. If purchasing materials online, purchase supplies at least two days in advance to allow for prepping. All class supplies purchased at Modern Domestic get a 10% discount - please inquire for the code.
Supply List:
- Pattern: Skirt No. 1 by Hundred Acts of Sewing
- Fabric: Choose a fabric with a solid or all over print to start. Cotton lawn or plain weave linen are excellent options for your first time sewing a bias garment. Advanced sewist options can include fabric with more drape, like a viscose or rayon. Save stripes and plaids that need to be matched for your second make!
- 1 spool of Mettler Metrosene All-Purpose Polyester Thread (fabric matching is recommended)
- Microtex Sewing Needles Variety Pack (Size 70/10 or 60/8 needed)
- ½” elastic (measurement based on waist size)
*Make sure to pre-wash or dry clean your fabric in advance of class. This prevents possible fabric shrinkage that could otherwise make your finished garment too small.
*Skill Level: Beginner and up- You’ve taken a class or two and are starting to get comfortable with the basics. You know what a seam allowance is, you’ve sewn a little on your own, but you still need a little help with remembering how to thread the machine and wind a bobbin. These classes usually have little if any homework to complete outside of class time. The prerequisite for any Beginner class is a Sew Basics class, Learn to Sew class, or equivalent. This skill level is not for people who have never used a sewing machine before.
