Bust adjustments are a powerful tool for any garment maker! Once mastered, they are a simple way to get better fitting tops and dresses. If you’ve ever experienced shirts that pull open, are tight in the chest, pull up at the front hem, or are too large in the shoulders then a Full Bust Adjustment will probably be your answer. If you’ve ever experienced sagging in the front bodice, or shoulders that can feel too tight then a Small Bust Adjustment should be your first thought. This class is a great first step for anyone interested in pattern adjustment and are ready to dip their toe in.

Students will practice this method using one of the following patterns of their choice: Azure Top, Wilder Top/Gown, or Shirt No 1. Pattern options are:

- The Azure Top is a chic sleeveless number with beautifully thought-out details like an all in one facing, back neckline keyhole, and fabric buttonhole loop. This is a great fitted basic for sewists that are working on their me-made wardrobes.

- The Wilder is a fast sew with some fun design elements. Perfect for newer sewists looking to have fun or more experienced sewists looking for an afternoon project.

- Shirt No 1 is a simple woven top with grown on sleeve caps. Recommended for students who haven't sewn a garment before but already know that bust adjustments will be an important part of every project.

Session 1:

- Cover typical issues seen when a small or large bust adjustment is needed.

- Take to find our necessary adjustment

- Learn how we alter pattern pieces for either large or small bust adjustments.

Session 2:

Open format work time. Some students will have finished their first adjusted garment and are looking to practice these skills again on a different pattern of their own choice, others may concentrate on further adjustments to fine tune their fit, and some newer sewist may sew their garment in that class to get some assistance with the methods and tools needed for a well sewn garment.

Supply List:

- Garment Pattern, choose one:

- Azure by Closet Core Patterns,

- Wilder by Friday Pattern Company, or

- Shirt No 1 by 100 Acts of Sewing

- Fabric (check your pattern for yardage requirements)

- 1 spool of Mettler Metrosene All-Purpose Polyester Thread

- Other Notions (Check pattern for additional notions)

- Swedish Tracing Paper

*Make sure to pre-wash your fabric in advance of class. This prevents possible fabric shrinkage that could otherwise make your finished garment too small.

*Skill Levels: Advanced Beginner - You have a good handle on the basics and are ready to dip your toe into more challenging waters. You’re still fairly new to sewing from patterns and could use help with how to manipulate the pattern to get a better fit. You want to add some new skills to your repertoire (invisible zippers, setting-in sleeves, sewing with a serger, etc.). Classes generally require homework.

Modern Domestic Labs: You're interested in sewing in a group setting and prefer to have an instructor's guidance on specific techniques and/or skills that are proposed in the Lab's topic. You have the ability to sew at your own pace, the expert help to keep you on track and sewing along, and a variety of options (sometimes endless!) when it comes to choosing the project you want to sew.
