Have you ever wanted to change up your favorite garment pattern, but you’re nervous to make the change? Well, now is your chance to learn how! You’ll have hands-on practice with instructors’ guidance to create a new garment from a pattern you love. This is not a fitting class, it’s about editing the look of a pattern that you like to use and that already fits you well.
During this Lab you will learn how to:
- Add and remove length to your pattern (ie. shirt to dress, lengthen shorts to pants).
- Create new style lines (ie. color blocking segments of your pattern or add in gathers or pleats).
- Move or edit dart placements (ie. turn darts to flare).
- Mesh two patterns together (ie. add collars and pockets!)
The beginning of class one is formatted as a lecture & demonstration. However, bring a selection of patterns you’d like to edit to the first session, we may be able to dig right into hacking your patterns on day one! Please Note: This class focuses on hacking your patterns, not completing the construction of a new garment. You'll have access to Open Sew for a month after class to complete your garment sewing.
Be prepared - purchase your supplies online or in person before class begins! Class supplies are available for purchase at Modern Domestic. Please note that our store hours are Monday-Saturday, 10am-5pm. Class supplies cannot be purchased when our shop is closed.
To purchase supplies in store, we recommend allowing at least 45 minutes to shop. Please note that our store hours are Monday-Saturday, 10am-5pm. If purchasing materials online, please purchase supplies at least two days in advance to allow for prepping. All class supplies purchased at Modern Domestic get a 10% discount - please inquire for the code.
Supply List:
- 1-2 Patterns for Hacking. Note: This is not a fitting class, it’s about editing the look of a pattern that you like to use and that already fits you well. You are welcome to bring in more to choose from if unsure!
- Scotch Clear Magic Tape (Shop Local: You can buy this material at Collage on Alberta Street.)
- Pen, Pencil, & Notebook (Optional: Bring a color pencil set to record changes in color.)
*Skill Levels: Advanced Beginner and Intermediate - You have a good handle on the basics and are ready to dip your toe into more challenging waters. You’ve sewn from patterns. You want to add some new skills to your repertoire (invisible zippers, setting-in sleeves, sewing with a serger, etc.). Classes generally require homework.
Modern Domestic Labs: You're interested in sewing in a group setting and prefer to have an instructor's guidance on specific techniques and/or skills that are proposed in the Lab's topic. You have the ability to sew at your own pace, the expert help to keep you on track and sewing along, and a variety of options (sometimes endless!) when it comes to choosing the project you want to sew.
