Learn to make timeless wardrobe essentials just in time for the holiday season using silky, flowy, drapey fabrics! You’ll learn the ins and outs of working with difficult fabrics such as drapey linen, viscose, rayons, charmeuse, georgette, silk, and the list goes on!
This is the perfect class for sewists who are new to or feel intimidated to sew party-going, or even bias cut, garments!
This class is designed for advanced beginners & intermediate sewists, as homework may be required to complete your garment within the class sessions. Each session will begin with a presentation, and then move to hands-on learning with a pattern of your choice!
Session 1 Focus - Cutting & Fabric Prep/Care
Session 2 Focus - Sewing & Garment Construction
Session 3 Focus - Hemming & Finishing
Be prepared - purchase your supplies online or in person before class begins! Class supplies are available for purchase at Modern Domestic. Please note that our store hours are Monday-Saturday, 10am-5pm. Class supplies cannot be purchased when our shop is closed.
To purchase supplies in store, we recommend allowing at least 45 minutes to shop. Our store hours are Monday-Saturday, 10am-5pm. If purchasing materials online, purchase supplies at least two days in advance to allow for prepping. All class supplies purchased at Modern Domestic get a 10% discount - please inquire for the code.
Supply List:
- Suggested Patterns: Tessuti Lois Dress, Elodie Wrap Dress by Closet Core, Bias Skirt No. 1 by Hundred Acts of Sewing, & Belvedere Waistcoat Vest by Thread Theory
- Fabric: based on garment pattern requirements.
- Swedish Tracing Paper (recommended for pattern tracing, and possibly needed for fabric cutting)
- 1 spool of Mettler Metrosene All-Purpose Polyester Thread (fabric matching is recommended)
- Microtex Sewing Needles Variety Pack (Size Variety Pack, 80/12 or 70/10 needed)
*Make sure to pre-wash or dry clean your fabric in advance of class. This prevents possible fabric shrinkage that could otherwise make your finished garment too small.
*Skill Level: Advanced Beginner & Intermediate - You have a good handle on the basics and are ready to dip your toe into more challenging waters. You’re still fairly new to sewing from patterns and could use help with how to manipulate the pattern to get a better fit. You want to add some new skills to your repertoire (invisible zippers, setting-in sleeves, sewing with a serger, etc.). Classes generally require homework.
