Have you ever wanted to recreate that favorite garment you wear over and over again? Well, now is your chance to learn how!

During this lab you will:

  • Make a sewing pattern from one of your garments
  • Create the steps by step instructions to sew your garment together
  • Learn how to choose appropriate fabrics and notions
  • Learn stitches and finishing techniques to make your garment look professional.

Be prepared - purchase your supplies online or in person before class begins! Class supplies are available for purchase at Modern Domestic. To purchase supplies online and pick up the day of your class, just select NE Alberta Store for pick-up. To purchase supplies in store, we recommend allowing at least 45 minutes to shop. Please note that our store hours are Monday-Saturday, 10am-5pm.

Supply List:

- Garment to Copy: Great options for class are a pencil or a-line skirt, elastic waist pants or pants with an invisible zipper, woven shirts or tank tops! Colleen recommends avoiding button-up shirts or pants with a zipper fly for your first copy.*  You are welcome to bring in a few to choose from if unsure!

- Swedish Tracing Paper

- Clover Japanese Chacopy Tracing Paper

- Clover Tracing Wheel Blunt

- Optional: Dritz Styling Design Ruler

*Homework may be necessary outside of each class in some cases depending on the project difficulty. This class focuses on making the pattern (and sewing instructions) for your new garment, and not completing the construction of your new garment. Depending on your project difficulty, you may be able to sew your garment in class.

*Skill Levels: Advanced Beginner - You have a good handle on the basics and are ready to dip your toe into more challenging waters. You’re still fairly new to sewing from patterns and could use help with how to manipulate the pattern to get a better fit. You want to add some new skills to your repertoire (invisible zippers, setting-in sleeves, sewing with a serger, etc.). Classes generally require homework.

Modern Domestic Labs: You're interested in sewing in a group setting and prefer to have an instructor's guidance on specific techniques and/or skills that are proposed in the Lab's topic. You have the ability to sew at your own pace, the expert help to keep you on track and sewing along, and a variety of options (sometimes endless!) when it comes to choosing the project you want to sew.
