If you’ve ever wanted to learn to sew quilts, now is your chance! This lab is great for first time quilters, a sewist who hasn’t taken a quilt class or a sewist who hasn’t quilted in a long time!

Choose from one of our suggested patterns, another simple pattern, or bring in a quilt project you’re stuck on!  Your instructor, Chloe Costello, will help you make the cozy quilt of your dreams.

This lab is designed as a crash course on quilting, with the main focus being piecing a quilt top.  Students are welcome to choose any quilt size and work at whatever pace is comfortable, but if you'd like to finish an entire quilt in this lab, we recommend choosing a small quilt size (wall hanging or baby) and planning for ample homework time outside of class. As with all labs, you have the ability to sew at your own pace, with your teacher to help keep you on track and sewing along.

Be prepared - purchase your supplies online or in person before class begins! Class supplies are available for purchase at Modern Domestic. Please note that our store hours are Monday-Saturday, 10am-5pm. Class supplies cannot be purchased when our shop is closed

To purchase supplies in store, we recommend allowing at least 45 minutes to shop. Please note that our store hours are Monday-Saturday, 10am-5pm. If purchasing materials online, please purchase supplies at least two days in advance to allow for prepping. All class supplies purchased at Modern Domestic get a 10% discount - please inquire for the code.

Supply List:

- A Beginner or Simple Quilt Pattern: A few that Chloe suggests are  Then Came June’s Blakely Quilt Pattern, Then Came June’s Bright Side Quilt, Penelope Handmade’s Edna, & Penelope Handmade’s Madeline

- Fabric - Please bring the fabric your pattern requires, and/or a work-in-progress that you want guidance on (See pattern to determine quantities, the Instructor recommends choosing backing, binding, and batting after the first class)

- 1 spool of Mettler Metrosene All-Purpose Polyester Thread, white, off white or neutral is recommended

*Skill Levels: Beginner - You’ve taken a class or two and are starting to get comfortable with the basics. You know what a seam allowance is, you’ve sewn a little on your own, but you still need a little help with remembering how to thread the machine and wind a bobbin. These classes usually have little if any homework to complete outside of class time. The prerequisite for any Beginner class is a Sew Basics class, Learn to Sew class, or equivalent. This skill level is not for people who have never used a sewing machine before.

Modern Domestic Labs: You're interested in sewing in a group setting and prefer to have an instructor's guidance on specific techniques and/or skills that are proposed in the Lab's topic. You have the ability to sew at your own pace, the expert help to keep you on track and sewing along, and a variety of options (sometimes endless!) when it comes to choosing the project you want to sew.
