Donation-Based Open Sew: Create, Connect, and Contribute

There is no better way to spend a day than sewing for a cause! Whether you're a seasoned sewist or a beginner, this donation-based Open Sew is an opportunity to share your skills, learn from fellow stitchers, and make a positive impact. 

All proceeds from donations will go toward supporting the Black Parent Initiative, the only culturally-specific, community-based, non-profit organization in Oregon focused solely on supporting Black/African American families with children 0-10 in the State of Oregon. The majority of families supported are from low to moderate-income communities and have complex issues that BPI addresses with expertise, compassion and love.

What to Expect:

Sewing Stations: We’ll have our classroom BERNINA sewing machines & sergers set up, offering everything you need from basic mending to more advanced projects. You’ll bring your own project, thread, and other notions and we’ll supply the tools and machines! 

Community: Meet fellow sewing enthusiasts, share ideas, and enjoy a collaborative, welcoming environment. It’s a chance to sew, relax, take care of yourself, and make a difference together.

Date: Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, January 19th, 2026 

Time: 2 hour time slots throughout the day: 10am -12pm, 12pm-2pm, & 2pm-4pm

Location: Modern Domestic, 422 NE Alberta Street.

Suggested Donation: $30+ 

Beginner + skill levels are welcome—bring your sewing project and enthusiasm to support a great cause with us. We can’t wait to see what you create!

Please Note: Staff will be available to support machine issues, though not available for in depth project instruction. This is an unsupervised event, attendees must be at least 18 years of age. If you sign up for multiple slots, please allow your donation to reflect the time you spend with us. The suggested donation for one slot is $30+.
