Learn to use a hemstitch sewing machine needle to create a beautiful decorative finish on your home decor or other sewing projects. In this class, you will learn to hemstitch on a square of fabric to make a beautiful decorative hankie or napkin.
Choose a lighter weight fabric to recreate a vintage looking handkerchief. Choose a mid-weight cotton/linen blend to make napkins that add a gorgeous finish to your table setting.
The hemstitch needle and stabilizer is included in the price of the class and will be given to you on the day of class.
Be prepared - purchase your supplies online or in person before your class begins! Class supplies are available for purchase at Modern Domestic. Please note that our store hours are Monday-Saturday, 10am-5pm & Sunday, 11am-4pm. Class supplies cannot be purchased when our shop is closed.
To purchase supplies in store, we recommend allowing at least 45 minutes to shop. If purchasing materials online, purchase supplies at least two days in advance to allow for prepping. All class supplies purchased at Modern Domestic get a 10% discount - please inquire for the code.
Supply List:
- ½ yard Fabric - We recommended using a natural fiber such as cotton lawn, linen, or cotton/linen blend.
- 1 or 2 spools Mettler Metrosene Thread (You are welcome to use contrasting or blending thread. Your thread color can be changed mid-project if you’d like to use contrasting color for your trim vs. hemstitch)
- 3 yards of trimming (lace, ball-fringe, or bias binding)
Skill Level: Beginner- You’ve taken a class or two and are starting to get comfortable with the basics. You know what a seam allowance is, you’ve sewn a little on your own, but you still need a little help with remembering how to thread the machine and wind a bobbin. These classes usually have little if any homework to complete outside of class time. The prerequisite for any Beginner class is a Sew Basics class, Learn to Sew class, or equivalent. This skill level is not for people who have never used a sewing machine before.
Class Cancellation Policy: A cancellation more than 72 hours before a class start date receives a full refund or credit. A cancellation within 72 hours is non-refundable. No-shows forfeit any refund or exchange. We hold this class cancellation policy to ensure our teachers are compensated for their time, and other students waiting for spots in full classes are not missing class opportunities due to late cancellations. Thank you for your understanding.
