Learn to sew an iconic (and practical) canvas tote, perfect for summer days at the beach or farmer’s market! This class is suitable for first-time sewists as well as more experienced sewists looking for an introduction to bag-making. You’ll learn machine basics, such as winding a bobbin, threading the machine, and using basic construction stitches. You will also learn how to topstitch neatly, create boxed corners, and manage bulky seams.

Be prepared - purchase your supplies online or in person before class begins! Class supplies are available for purchase at Modern Domestic. Please note that our store hours are Monday-Saturday, 10am-5pm. Class supplies cannot be purchased when our shop is closed. 

To purchase supplies in store, we recommend allowing at least 45 minutes to shop. Our store hours are Monday-Saturday, 10am-5pm. If purchasing materials online, purchase supplies at least two days in advance to allow for prepping. All class supplies purchased at Modern Domestic get a 10% discount - please inquire for the code. 

Supply List:

- 3/4 yd heavy weight (9–11 oz) canvas or duck for main fabric and pockets. Note: if you choose a twill or lighter weight canvas, your bag will have a softer, less structured look.

- 1/2 yd heavy weight (9–11 oz) canvas or duck for accent fabric (base and fabric straps).

- Optional: 3 yd of 1.5” wide webbing to substitute for fabric straps.

- Size 90/14 Jeans/Denim Needles

- One spool of Mettler Metrosene All-Purpose Polyester Thread that matches your main or accent fabric (you will have visible topstitching).

- Optional: an additional spool that matches your second fabric and/or webbing.

Skill Level: Learn to Sew - You have never touched a sewing machine before or it has been years since you have. You know very little to nothing about sewing but you are eager to get started.
