Do you ever feel overwhelmed choosing fabric for a new project from the fabric store (or your stash)? Do you fawn over fabric but don’t actually know much about textiles?

Join Aliya for an introduction to fabric for home sewists! In this interactive, lecture-based class, we’ll learn how fiber is transformed into fabric and explore how fabric characteristics like weight, drape, and construction type influence the look and feel of your final sewn objects.

We’ll discuss the differences between woven and knit fabrics, explain the fabric grainline, direction of greatest stretch, and decode common terminology so you can choose fabric for your next project with more confidence. We will also cover how to prepare fabric for sewing, tips for cutting and sewing difficult fabrics, and general care instructions for me-made objects.

During class, we’ll assemble a swatch book of common fabric types to support your sewing journey. Please note that this class does NOT involve any sewing!

Supply List:*

- Pen/Pencil and Notebook to take notes if desired.

- All of your fabric-related questions!

*A class handout and all swatch book materials will be provided.
